Ford Recalls 668,000 F-150 Trucks Globally Over Unexpected Downshifts
According to a Reuters report, on June 25, Ford Motor Company announced a global recall of 668,000 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2014 model year due to a potential issue that could cause the vehicle to unexpectedly downshift, leading to driver loss of control or rear-wheel lockup.
In March of this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began an investigation into whether the 2014 F-150 needed a recall after receiving complaints about the truck unexpectedly downshifting without warning. Subsequently, Ford and the NHTSA held several meetings to discuss the issue. However, Ford stated that the probability of unexpected downshifts in the 2014 F-150 is still lower than in the 2011-2013 models, which were previously recalled.
The recall affects 552,000 F-150 vehicles in the United States. Ford has received 300 warranty reports, 96 field reports, and 124 consumer complaints, including two injury reports and one accident report. The NHTSA reported that one owner experienced “an unexpected downshift that resulted in the vehicle colliding with a concrete barrier and another vehicle,” with both drivers sustaining injuries.
The company explained that a loss of signal could cause the transmission to downshift regardless of the vehicle’s speed. Dealers will update the powertrain control module software of the F-150 trucks as part of the recall.
Reuters noted that this is the latest recall by Ford since 2016 over this issue. In 2016, Ford recalled 153,000 F-150 models from 2011-2012 equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions to address the downshift problem. In December 2017, the NHTSA initiated an investigation into the issue. In February 2019, Ford expanded the recall in North America to include 1.48 million F-150 vehicles, including the 2013 model. Later in 2019, Ford recalled an additional 107,000 2013 F-150 trucks due to related safety concerns.
