Volkswagen Recalls 271,330 Cars in the US Due to Faulty Passenger Airbag Deployment

Volkswagen is initiating a recall of 271,330 vehicles in the United States due to a potential safety hazard with the front passenger airbag. The recall affects certain models of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, spanning the years 2021 through 2024 for the Atlas and 2020 through 2024 for the Atlas Cross Sport.

The issue stems from a fault in the occupant detection system, which may prevent the airbag from deploying when a passenger is seated in the front seat. This could lead to an increased risk of injury in the event of a collision. Volkswagen will rectify this by replacing the sensor mats in the occupant detection system.

In a statement, Volkswagen noted that the issue could arise from a contact fault between the car seat heaters and the weight sensors. This could cause the passenger airbag to be deactivated when a person is sitting in the seat. To alert drivers, Volkswagen has implemented a warning system that includes a warning light and sound.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification by email by August 16th. Once the necessary parts are available, dealers will replace the faulty components at no cost to the owners.

This recall follows a similar issue that Volkswagen faced in March, when it recalled 143,000 Atlas SUVs. Volkswagen is working closely with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address this issue and is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers.

NHTSA data shows that Volkswagen has conducted nine recalls this year, affecting approximately 641,188 cars.
