Tesla’s German Factory Expansion Receives Approval from German Environmental Department
According to foreign media reports, the environmental department of Brandenburg, Germany, has approved Tesla’s application to expand its factory in Gruenheide, Germany, clearing a significant hurdle for the company’s development plans.
The authorities stated that the approval initially allows Tesla to establish an asphalt-paved logistics area within the factory and to install staircases and a security entrance in the factory’s stamping workshop. Tesla has not immediately commented on this news.
Tesla plans to double the factory’s production capacity, reaching 100 GWh of battery production annually and 100,000 vehicles annually, in an effort to gain a dominant position in the European electric vehicle market.
However, environmentalists and local groups are concerned that the expansion of the factory, located within a drinking water protection area, could endanger the region’s water supply.
In May, protesters opposing the expansion clashed with local police, with some attempting to storm the factory. According to the protest organizer “Disrupt Tesla,” about 800 people participated in the protest. The group claims that Tesla’s expansion will cause environmental damage in the area.
Previously, members of the Gruenheide city council held a meeting under police protection, with demonstrators holding banners outside the meeting hall that read “People Over Profit” and “Shut Down Tesla’s Water Taps.”
